Kākāriki Project

For many years a remnant population of kākāiki has hung on in the Okiwi Valley. Okiwi School and local landowners have been trapping and planting in this valley for around 20 years, building on the old pūriri and tōtara forest around the Okiwi Reserve. The trust has begun a research project to locate and protect nest trees of kākāiki and to identify ways in which breeding success can be improved.  This project is supported by the Okiwi School, Okiwi Community Pest Project and local landowners.
