KBRT commenced in January 2010 to find out what rat densities there were in a particular area. We began with the laying out of rat tracking tunnels with ink pads, then followed through with the laying out of rat snap traps and bait stations. With in 2-3 weeks we found the bird life dawn chorus went from being silent in this area to being alive with bird song so this was encouraging to say the least......

The Department of Conservation’s Conservation Management Strategy for Aotea also highlights other key ecosystems for protection and restoration including:

  • Te Paparahi – an area of forest in the north of the island where kokako were last found
  • Hirakimata – main breeding site of the endangered black petrel
  • Estuaries and wetlands – including Kaitoke swamp and Okiwi estuary, home to pateke, fernbirds, bitterns and banded rail
